In a NEW Minn-LInK brief, IMO research into a Minneapolis school mobility program called the Choice is Yours (CIY) found more favorable results for student participants than prior research. CIY students who took tests at least a full year after participating in the program had significantly higher math scores than non-CIY students. The same group of later-year students, however, had reading scores that were not significantly different from non-CIY students.
Notably these results, and those from prior studies, likely understate the successfulness of the program, due to their lack of controlling for prior schools attended and by not considering differences in the availability of school support services. Future research needs to better account for these factors and the full trajectory of student performance over time when evaluating school mobility programs.
